Erika (Mesenbourg) Velez, PT, DPT
Facility Director / Physical Therapist
Listening is an invaluable part of the patient examination that helps the Physical Therapist determine an appropriate objective examination and subsequently the most effective treatment plan.· In my opinion, movement is the best medicine. Often that requires the PT to perform manual techniques that facilitate the movement of joints, muscles, and nerves that will allow the patient to move efficiently. Once we restore the normal movement of the area of dysfunction, the patient can begin with active therapeutic exercise to address their functional limitations.
My professional focus is first to listen to the patient. What are the patient concerns? What are their rehab goals? And, then I work to formulate a treatment plan where the patient is an active participant in their recovery. In my professional opinion, Physical Therapy is not something that happens the patient, but something the patient participates in to achieve their rehabilitation goals.
Erika joined PHOENIX in 2019 and has practiced outpatient physical therapy for 15 years. Working previously as an adjunct faculty member at Marymount University’s Physical Therapy program, she instructed students in orthopedic assessment and interventions where she earned the Clinical Instructor of the year award. Erika’s advanced certifications include Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) via the American Board Physical Therapy Specialists, Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT) through Matiland Seminars, and Trigger Point Dry Needling Certified in 2015 through Kinetacore. Utilizing her manual therapy techniques and Trigger Point Dry Needling skillset in conjunction with Therapeutic Exercise, she helps her patients achieve their rehab goals.
Erika resides in Fulton, MD, with her husband and enjoys spending time outdoors. Together, with their family, they also love to travel. As a seasoned downhill skier, she has traveled to Europe and throughout the US to places like Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Alaska to ski “the big ones.” Erika loves fitness and enjoys staying fit with Barre, Pilates, and long hikes.
