Evaluating Concussions Through ImPACT® Testing

A young soccer player with a head injury recieves medical attention.

Up until recent years, concussions haven’t been taken as seriously as they should be. With professional sports teams often downplaying their players’ concussions severity, that mindset trickled down into amateur sports and activities.

Your brain is the body’s most important organ which means it should always be treated with extra precaution. As school sports start to ramp up, take a moment to get educated on concussions, testing, and treatment.

ImPACT® Testing

Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Testing (ImPACT®) is a non-invasive and scientifically validated evaluation tool used to diagnose, manage and treat concussions. The assessment tests you at your typical baseline.

So if a head injury or incident occurs, a trained professional, including Phoenix physical therapists, will administer an ImPACT test to evaluate if a concussion has been sustained and the severity of it. Once the physician reads and interprets the results, the therapists and doctors will work together to create a treatment plan that gets the patient back to feeling like themselves again. During that treatment plan, the baseline and exam results of the ImPACT test will be used as a measurement tool for progress and healing.

Concussion Symptoms

It’s important to remember that concussions don’t just happen in sports. They can occur in car accidents, falls, work injuries, or other activities. Whether you think it was “just a bump” or not, you should be mindful of concussions symptoms so that you can seek help immediately. Symptoms of concussions are:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Fogginess
  • Inability to tolerate car travel and crowds
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
  • Difficulty concentrating and reading

Remember, your symptoms’ severity can vary. If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should seek medical help immediately.
