Based on the work of Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method of
exercise and rehabilitation incorporates muscle control,
flexibility, coordination, strength and tone through physical and
mental conditioning. Pilates integrates the trunk, pelvis and
shoulder girdle and emphasizes proper breathing. With the
correct spine and pelvic alignment, and smooth flowing movement,
patients and clients are able to access each part of the body
individually.
Correct execution of these exercises improves
alignment and posture, increases body awareness and flexibility
while contributing to the improved muscular symmetry
and balance so many people need for injury prevention,
recovery from injury and improved performance. At PHOENIX
(St. Mary's only), Pilates is the perfect complement to our
physical therapy services. The Pilates method emphasizes
precisely controlled movements strengthening the upper and lower
extremities while integrating the deep core, abdominal and back
muscles.
Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous
benefits:
- Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy
breathing which is a primary focus of this work.
- Integrated strength and flexibility, particularly of the deep
core, abdomen and back muscles; mind-body coordination; balance and
body awareness; all of which are key components in an effective
Pilates program.
- Improved posture, balance, and core strength are achieved
through a variety of different positions and challenges to the
body.
- Improved bone density and joint health are an added benefit as
Pilates is suitable for all ages and all fitness levels.
