Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is the evaluation and treatment of disorders of the muscles, bones or joints by way of physical means - examples are therapeutic massage, water, heat and exercise - to restore movement and function, relieve pain and promote optimal health. A physical therapist may evaluate or offer a consultation to a client. To perform any treatments, most states require that a physician's prescription be obtained. Our goal is to help you to return to a pain-free, active lifestyle again.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy involves the evaluation and treatment of functional or performance deficits related to daily living tasks and occupational roles. These can include activities such as dressing and personal hygiene to home management and work responsibilities. Adaptive devices or equipment, home exercise programs and cognitive retraining are just a few of the means used by occupational therapists to help restore independence in a safe home or work environment. A physician's referral in needed to receive treatments. Our goal is to return you to an independent lifestyle again.
Speech Therapy
Speech Therapy is the corrective or rehabilitative treatment of physical and/or cognitive deficits/disorders resulting in difficulty with verbal communication. This includes both speech (articulation, phonology, voice, fluency, oral motor acuity) and language (morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, receptive and expressive language, reading and writing as well as auditory processing). The Speech-Language Pathologist provides a wide range of services for all ages. Professionals often work with those who have speech and language disorders, are stroke victims or neurologically impaired, suffer developmental disorders or have hearing impairments or swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). Those individuals with a medical condition require a physician's prescription for Speech Therapy, but those with non-medical conditions, such as stuttering, may receive Speech Therapy without a physician's prescription. Our goal is to help you overcome a speech or language disorder to reach a successful outcome.
Sports Rehabilitation/Orthopedic Rehabilitation
We provide sports rehabilitation to both the professional and recreational athlete. The rehabilitation team at PHOENIX Rehabilitation works closely with the referring physician to quickly yet safely return the athlete back to the field or court. Utilizing manual techniques as well as state-of-the-art equipment, the athlete is put on a recovery program designed specifically for him/her and his/her condition. If necessary, the physical therapist can provide on-site coverage during athletic events in order to evaluate the injury immediately. Upon the athlete's recovery, we stress injury prevention and proper conditioning within a particular sport.
Aquatic Rehabilitation
Aquatic therapy is one technique used to treat certain muscular conditions. As water suspends the body, less comprehensive force occurs on muscles and joints, which helps make movement easier without added pain or physical stress. The buoyancy of water practically eliminates the 'jolting' impact of land exercise, thus the movements are less strenuous to the affected area. You need not be a swimmer to participate in this type of rehabilitation program. In some cases, improvements are seen at a more rapid pace than just performing land-based exercises.
Neurological Rehabilitation
The physical therapists at PHOENIX Rehabilitation assess and provide treatment of various neurological dysfunctions such as impairments from trauma, infection, and congenital defects, and vascular and degenerative diseases. Our goal is to help restore the patient's independence as well as regain mobility and decrease muscle weakness. We work with the Occupational Therapist when necessary to assist in the overall recovery process.

Spinal Rehabilitation
Spinal rehabilitation involves the rehabilitation of spinal cord conditions such as tumors on or near the spinal cord, injury to the spinal cord, and degenerative diseases. Our physical therapists design an individualized program specific to the patient's diagnosis. We work to increase mobility, decrease muscle weakness and help our patients regain some or all of their independence.
EMG/NCV Testing
PHOENIX has several skilled physical therapists that have pursued advanced education and training in electroneuromyographic testing. This allows PHOENIX to offer the detailed nerve conduction and needle examinations prescribed by physicians. When you receive an EMG / NCV test, our trained physical therapist makes a recording of your electrical activity in specific muscles and nerves in order to determine the cause and location of disease and/or muscle conditions. The physical therapist then translates the results and makes a diagnosis. The report is given to the referring physician for his interpretation and prognosis.
Home Health Physical Therapy
Our physical therapists can perform evaluations and design individualized treatments for a homebound patient based upon their findings in the initial evaluation. Our goal not only is to return the patient to a healthy lifestyle again but to see that the patient can function safely in his/her environment. Suggestions for modifying the home environment is one way we can help reach our goal.
Hand Therapy
Hand therapy helps the hand, wrist and/or finger(s) regain as much function and feeling as possible and can be performed by a physical or occupational therapist. Often, the PT or OT, through the advanced board certification studies can receive a CHT (Certified Hand Specialist) status. At PHOENIX, our hand therapy team designs programs to meet each individual's specific need and may include splinting, hot and cold modalities, joint or soft tissue mobilization, massage techniques, range of motion as well as gripping, pinching and strengthening exercises. Occasionally adaptive devices are necessary to aid in the treatment process. Again our goal is to restore useful function which will enable our patient to increase productivity in both work and daily living activities.
Massage Therapy
While massage therapy is not capable of curing serious or life-threatening medical conditions, it has been proven useful in providing welcome relief by helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, tension, depression, insomnia and stress. It has also been shown to relieve back and neck pain, headaches, muscle pains and some forms of chronic pain. Massage is a systematic manual application of pressure and movement to the soft tissues of the body including the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia (membrane surrounding the body's muscle and muscle groups). Good health is encouraged through the promotion of the flow of blood and lymph, stimulation of nerves and stretching and loosening of muscles and connective tissues, helping to keep them elastic. Some of the techniques used include: Pfrimmer deep muscle therapy, craniosacral therapy, therapeutic massage, myofascial release, muscle energy and reflexology. Some additional benefits to massage therapy include: promotion of nourished and healthy skin, reduction of blood pressure, improvement of immune system functioning and the release of your body's natural endorphins (which reduce pain naturally). At PHOENIX Rehabilitation and Health Services, you can visit our massage therapist with or without receiving other services at our facilities. Most insurance plans do not directly cover massage therapy and payment is expected upon the completion of your massage therapy session. Gift certificates are available for purchase, and recipients are asked to mention the certificate at the time of appointment scheduling. Massage therapy services are not available at all PHOENIX locations. Call us toll free 888-644-7747 to find the clinic nearest you that offers this service.

Women's Health Services(Urinary Incontinence)
In order to better serve all persons living or working in the communities we serve, PHOENIX Rehabilitation has created a new service specifically tailored to meet the needs of women's health related conditions, particularly urinary incontinence. Typically, this condition is caused by muscle weakness or over-activity of the bladder and should not be considered a problem to quietly endure. There are various types of incontinence including stress, urge, mixed, reflex, overflow and functional. At PHOENIX Rehabilitation, our team of physical therapists will aide the patient in determining from which type(s) she is suffering and what plan of care is most appropriate. As with all of our programs, a patient receiving women's health care from PHOENIX Rehabilitation can expect confidential support from a licensed Physical Therapist who will work closely with her by performing a thorough evaluation in addition to educating her in ways to improve her overall health. Our safe, non-surgical approach to care consists of a combination of Kegel exercises, pelvic muscle force field strengthening activities and biofeedback. (Biofeedback acts as a mirror, showing what the muscles are doing inside the body as they contract and relax.) Individuals seeking help should ask their doctor for a Physical Therapy referral which can help them regain control and return to the activities they once enjoyed! Call us toll free 888-644-7747 to find the clinic nearest you that offers women's health services.
Industrial Rehabilitation
Industrial rehabilitation involves a comprehensive approach to treating work injuries that is multi-faceted. We believe that it is important to recognize both the needs of the industry as well as the patient. Our clinicians attend post-graduate education which focuses on the treatment of work related injuries. We believe that it is essential to maintain open lines of communication with employers, physicians, and rehab counselors. We encourage injured workers to take an active role in their rehabilitation, thus fostering patient motivation and a quick but safe recovery. We emphasize active treatment such as exercise and functional tasks as opposed to passive treatment. We believe that our rehabilitation programs are best utilized when they are specific to a patient's pre-injury work position, and we will work with employers to insure that programs are consistent with job needs. As part of our Industrial rehabilitation program we utilize functional capacity evaluations, pre-employment physical capabilities testing, job site analysis, work conditioning, and worker safety in-services.
Functional Capacity Evaluation
The Physical and Occupational Therapists at PHOENIX are trained to perform functional capacity evaluations (FCE's) to assist an employer, physician, or an insurance company in determining the level of work activity an injured or diseased worker can achieve. These tests consist of a detailed physical exam which includes strength, range of motion, and sensory-motor testing, review of pertinent medical history, physical capabilities testing (phys-caps) with evaluation of material and non-material handling job tasks, evaluation of endurance to specific work tasks, body mechanics analysis, and evaluation for any non-organic signs and symptoms that may be complicating patient recovery. The results are communicated to the physician and employer for consideration of the employee's work responsibilities and to determine the best prognosis with recommendations of additional service if needed.

Pre-employment Physical Capabilities Testing
If desired by employers or physicians our Physical and Occupational Therapists can provide pre-employment physical capabilities testing. These exams provide the employer with physical information about prospective employees specific to the job tasks the employee must perform. The testing includes detailed information regarding the potential employee's past medical history, a detailed physical regarding strength, range of motion, balance, and cardiovascular endurance to work tasks, evaluation of material handling tasks tested to an occasional level (up to 33% of the work day) or a frequent level (up to 66% of the work day) and evaluation of non-material handling tasks to include standing, walking, bending, reaching forward and overhead, squatting, climbing, kneeling and crawling. When possible, these tests are customized to specific job descriptions as directed by the employer.
Work Conditioning
At PHOENIX our Physical and Occupational Therapists will utilize work conditioning to assist patients in returning to their pre-injury work level in a safe and timely manner. Work conditioning is 3 to 5 days per week, 2 to 4 hours per session. Work conditioning includes cardiovascular conditioning, strengthening and flexibility exercise, joint and spine stabilization exercise, instruction of safe and proper body mechanics, and training in both material and non-material handling job tasks. When possible, work conditioning tasks are customized to meet the needs of a specific job description.
Job-Site Analysis
Upon request of an employer or physician our Physical and Occupational Therapists can evaluate a specific job site for a particular employee or general job description. This analysis consists of safety issues, ergonomic settings, and patient education to insure that proper body mechanics are used by the employee. Once the evaluation is complete, a report is generated stating what changes, if any, need to occur in order to make the work station more compatible to the employee as well as helping the employee to take an active role regarding injury prevention.
Worker Safety In-services
If desired by employers or physicians our Physical and Occupational Therapists will provide worker safety in-services. The purpose of these in-services is to provide the employer and employees with the opportunity to learn injury prevention techniques specific to job tasks. These in-services include instruction in proper posture and positioning for static work stations, instruction in proper lifting techniques, instruction in hand/wrist injury prevention and care, supervisor training and work station exercises. Emphasis is placed on teaching the employee what he or she must do to prevent injury, as opposed to what the employer must do. We believe that this fosters an active role by employees regarding injury prevention. When possible, these in-services are customized to specific job descriptions and work stations as directed by the employer.
Strides Foot and Ankle Program
Strides is a state of the art rehabilitation program specializing in the evaluation, treatment and prevention of foot and ankle disorders. Our team of licensed physical therapists treat all foot, ankle, toe and lower leg disorders ranging from musculoskeletal disorders to diabetic complications.
During an initial office visit, a PHOENIX therapist will thoroughly evaluate each patient's needs and implement a customized treatment program. The patient's referring physician will receive a detailed report, including a summary of the patient's deficits and an outline of the patient's rehabilitation program.
Wound Care Program
Wound
care is a service provided by health care professionals trained
in the evaluation and treatment of different types of wounds to
improve healing. These professionals can include physical
therapists among others.
The
wound care program at PHOENIX Rehabilitation considers all
aspects of the body that may compromise healing of a chronic
wound. Through this, we can provide therapy services to enhance
healing in the difficult to heal wound. We will work with both
the patient and the family members to educate them regarding
special needs including cleaning the wound area and possible
dressing changes. Our goal is to promote healing, as well as
independence in dressing changes and education in measures to
prevent additional wound development.
