Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy is one technique used to treat certain musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary and integumentary conditions. As water suspends the body, less comprehensive force occurs on muscles and joints, which helps make movement easier without added pain or physical stress. The buoyancy of water practically eliminates the 'jolting' impact of land exercise, thus the movements are less strenuous to the affected area. You need not be a swimmer to participate in this type of rehabilitation program. In some cases, improvements are seen at a more rapid pace than just performing land-based exercises. The unique properties of water, including buoyancy, accommodative resistance and support enhance interventions for patients across a wide age span.  PHOENIX facilities use the Aqua Ark® tank to provide this service.

Aquatic therapy can help to help improve:

  • Function and independence
  • Endurance/conditioning
  • Body mechanics and posture
  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Gait and ambulation
  • Relaxation
