PROFESSIONAL PHILOSOPHY...
"My approach to the practice of Physical Therapy is multi-faceted. It begins with the
patient's involvement in the rehabilitation process. At the time of the initial
evaluation, each and every person I work with receives activities to be performed
at home, education about their injury and instruction on how to best manage their
condition away from the clinic. Modalities, which can be overdone, play the important
role of helping us better manage our patient's symptoms and/or enhance the body's
natural physiology of healing when utilized appropriately.
Next is the application of manual therapy and techniques which is what I believe makes our
profession unique and more effective than it would be otherwise. These techniques
are variable in their nature and basis, but when employed properly, give
us many more tools to hasten the recovery of function and diminish pain.
Lastly, when someone returns for follow-up care, the focus is always on
those treatments and techniques that they cannot perform on their own or don't
have access to outside of the clinic."
PATIENT CARE PHILOSOPHY...
"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."
A lesson I have learned and come to appreciate over my career.
Pragmatically, I've come to understand that if someone isn't improving or the changes I'm looking for aren't happening,
it's time for a change in treatment, further investigation or both. There is more than one answer to just about every
problem when dealing with the human body. I will leave you with this quote from Wilma Rudolph:
"Things turn out best for those who make the best out of the way things turn out."
And that's what I am here to help my patients do.

John Duffy, PT, OCS
Physical Therapist /
Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist
John Duffy
joined the PHOENIX Rehabilitation and Health Services team
of Mt. Lebanon in September 2008. “Duffy” grew up in
Birdland, located just behind the PHOENIX clinic, where his
Mom still resides. Incidentally, this is the same house
where he was born. He spent 17 years practicing just down
the street, and laughs when he reminds himself that both
facilities were once grocery stores. Duffy’s wife grew up in
Bridgeville, and now they reside in the South Hills
community with their two sons, Jadan and Jonathan. Duffy
asserts, “Treating old neighbors, classmates, former school
teachers and even my childhood family physician means a lot
to me, and I will continue to uphold my reputation and
provide the best care possible.” |

PROFESSIONAL PHILOSOPHY...
“Healthcare
has significantly changed over the past few years, to the
point where most patients have only a limited amount of
covered physical therapy sessions per year, regardless of
the severity of the condition. Add on a co-pay for each
visit, and it becomes paramount that the therapist be able
to identify the root causes of a patient’s pain and/or
movement dysfunction, and address those in the most
efficient and expedient manner. In the majority of the cases
I see, the patient presents with a problem that developed
for no apparent reason. I have to become a detective and
quickly narrow down what happened and why, and rectify. The
"I stepped in a hole and sprained my ankle" cases are the
easy ones to treat.....we know what happened, and just need
to resolve the pain, swelling, weakness and stiffness
issues. Unfortunately, these are not the majority of cases
that are present to the clinic. My overall goal is to
eliminate the patient's problem, and then make sure he or
she knows what to do in order to prevent a recurrent
episode.”
PATIENT CARE PHILOSOPHY...
“I learned early
in my career that we graduate PT school with the basic tools
and skills, and need to learn so much more once we begin to
practice. A mentor taught me to read at least one article
every night before bed, a habit I quickly began to enjoy. In
2001, I decided to create a website for other physical
therapists, as well as physicians and athletic trainers,
where I would post an abstract and critique an article, then
share with all. I ultimately wanted to create a forum and
database where all the site members would contribute their
skills and ideas. I also began to actively participate in
physical therapy/rehabilitation discussion forums on the
internet, both to share my skills and ideas, and to learn
from others.
In 7 years, the site has grown quite a bit, with members
from all over the world. I even have an orthopaedic surgeon
residing in India who has contributed to the site and
participates in the learning process. As patients trust me
with their care, and many physicians in the area recommend
my services to their patients, I need to continue learning
and changing as necessary, implementing the newest ideas and
skills.....I owe this to my patients.”
